Introductory Accounting in English 2011

Course Information

The study of what we in Japan call "Eibun Kaikei" can take a number of forms. Key variables include a) the subject of study, b) the language of textbooks and other reading material and c) the language of live instruction in the classroom. In this course, we will address the issue of accounting abuse, a subject that is at once very universal (i.e., by no means confined to the UK, US or other English-speaking countries) and yet diverse (each country displaying unique manifestations of accounting abuse). We will base our inquiry on a very recent publication in the English language addressing the issue. And we will try to use English as well as Japanese as the language of instruction and discussion in the classroom.

This course require students to get a certain level of TOEIC Score. See a syllabus about a certain level.

Course Purpose

Students taking the course will gain an experience to immerse themselves in an English language-based study of how accounting techniques can be and are actually abused to attain illicit gain in various countries of the world today. The study will enable students to comprehend and actively discuss, through the use of English as the language of discourse, this pervasive problem of accounting abuse. And through international comparisons, students will be able to place the problem of accounting abuse in their home country (countries) in a broader global perspective.
